Ask The Green Lantern

Slate.com has launched The Green Lantern, a weekly Q&A about a wide range of issues dealing with the environment. Every Tuesday, Brendan I. Koerner answers readers’ questions from “cloth diapers for your baby” to “debunking the email about a Hummer H3 being more environmentally friendly then a Prius.”

    Hello,
I hope that one of Brendan Koerner’s comments on the Steven Colbert Show today, July 31, 2008 can be amended. During a smart and humorous interview, Mr. Koerner did not let people know that the mercury in compact fluorescent light bulbs can be problematic, especially if the light bulbs simply become part of a land fill. These broken bulbs can release mercury and it can seep into our ground water. Considering the increasing popularity of these bulbs, their proper disposal should be widely addressed.
    Thanks,
    Barb Ewell
